Why You Will Like This Recipe
If you’re looking to elevate your plain hot ham and cheese sandwich check out this recipe! The sandwich is baked in the oven until the cheese is hot and bubbly and then a flavorful butter made with minced onion, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and butter gets brushed on top of the bun. I’ve been making my sandwiches this way ever since.
I also want to thank Kings Hawaiian for selling a package of sweet rolls that only have 4 of them in there. That is the perfect amount for 1 or two people. Not sponsored, I just really like their buns!
Ingredients Needed Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
- Dinner Rolls - Make your own homemade buns or buy them at the store. Check the bakery section at your grocery store. The one where I live makes really good dollar buns and my family loves those. They are highly requested at Holidays. Kings Hawaiian works really well with this recipe.
- Cheese - Swiss is what I normally use but cheddar would also work
- Sliced Deli Ham - can also use sliced Turkey meat
- Herbed Butter - Minced onions, prepared mustard, Worcestershire Poppy Seeds, and melted butter. The melted butter brushes easier onto the buns when it is melted.
- Trader Joe’s Everything Bagel Seasoning is another great option to sprinkle on top of the buns for seasoning.
- See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
How to Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°. In a small mixing bowl mix onion, mustard, Worcestershire, and poppyseeds. Leaving the dinner rolls intact, slice them open so that you have one solid top and bottom. P.S. Sorry for the messy counter top. 🙂
Step 2: Place the bottom half on a baking sheet. Line the bottom half of the rolls with ham and cheese.
Step 3: Return the top part of the rolls on top of the ham and cheese. Drizzle the butter and seasoning mixture over the top of the rolls.
Step 4: Cover with foil and bake for 15-20 minutes or till warmed through. Separate with a sharp knife and serve.
Recipe Tips
If you don't cover the sandwiches in the oven with tin foil the butter will turn a brown or black color on top of the sandwiches. Not a pretty presentation.
Instead of poppy seeds and onion flakes try it with Everything But the Bagel Seasoning from Trader Joes.

I made a pan of these delectable sandwiches for our Christmas Eve family gathering. They were amazing and not a bit was leftover! People were even picking out the gooey, crunchy bits left in the pan! I was a bit hesitant to brush the buttery topping over the buns, thinking it should go inside the sandwiches, but I'm glad I followed your instructions...they were perfect! Thank you for an awesome recipe! It's one I will surely use again as I know my family will be requesting them!
